It seems DC Comics reboot in September, following Flashpoint, will not be an actual reboot afterall..
Most of the usual characters, even later generations like Green Lantern Guy Gardner or Dick Grayson will be back..only Barry Allen/The Flash will mess up details of the "timeline" which will serve DC to reboot comic book numberings and make this a new new starting point for readers who will want to jump into DC.
First up: What was really that wrong with DC's "current" universe??
Anyway, nerd-rants aside, it is shaping up...nicely anyway.
I know this is all just to make "things seem fresh" for on-going series that have been running for half a century already..but do they need such cimplicated way to do so? I mean European comics like Asterix, the Smurfs, Lucky Luke or Spirou have also been running for as much longer..without the need to over complicated things...
Anyway, moving on, here's the listing of the first wave of revamped titles:
MISTER TERRIFIC #1 -- by Eric Wallace and Roger Robinson
They're giving a on-going for this JSA-er! Random, but good move I suppose.
We need more new titles.
THE SAVAGE HAWKMAN #1 -- by Tony Daniel and Philip Tan.
Awfully clumsy design (thanks to Jim Lee I guess)
According to the pitch, Carter Hall will now be "an archeologist who specializes in alien ruins"??
GREEN ARROW #1 -- by JT Krul and Dan Jurgens
Dan Jurgens on this?? I guess I'll have to check it out then :P
And is it only me or does he looks quite Smallville-ized now?
THE FLASH #1 -- by Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato
Geoff Johns favorite is back in a new regular...by Brian Buccellato? Still Manapul on the artwork, which is nice.
But the question is "Will it be Barry Allen the original Silver Age Flash or his ex-sidekick and modern Flash Wally West?" I'm guessing Wally... (if they didn't alter Barry overall design-reboot style)
JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL #1 -- by Dan Jurgens and Aaron Lopresti
(and the line-up appears to be Batman, Booster Gold, Guy Gardner, Fire, Ice, Vixen, Rocket Red, August General In Iron of the Great Ten, and...Donna Troy?)
What did they do to Booster?? He looks awful now!!
But..
kinda reminiscent of his BFF Ted Kord's Blue Beetle..which is nice..?
DC UNIVERSE PRESENTS #1 -- An anthology series in which the first story features Deadman, by Paul Jenkins and Bernard Chang
Great idea. Probably the new "must have" book from this lineup.
CAPTAIN ATOM #1 -- by JT Krul and Freddie Williams II
Alright.. I guess.
Looks more like Dr. Manhattan from Watchmen than Cap' Atom though~
WONDER WOMAN #1 -- by Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang:
So, DC reboots and WW keeps her redesign?
Well, I guess that's what happens when Jim Lee's in charge, right? (as EIC and costume designer)
But at least it looks slighty better than what we had now.
AQUAMAN #1 -- by Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis
Expected.
THE FURY OF FIRESTORM #1 -- by Ethan Van Sciver, Gail Simone, and Yildiray Cinar.
Firestorm! Back on a book? Totally unexpected! (even with his main role in Brightest Day recently).
He's now gonna be Jason Rusch and Ronnie Raymond. (so that makes 3 Firestorm? 2 new forms + a "fusion"?)
Superman and Batman titles are currently MIA it seems..maybe DC is afraid to reveal the ones that risk to change/alienate the readers the most...or just to keep the surprise..?
The reboot is looking so far minor and quite localized. Since even a Nightwing book as been confirmed.
How will this actually play out? Will this put a stop to current on-going storylines like Grant Morrison's Batman? Who knows..
What of characters like the current Teen Titans? Superboy? Red Robin? Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle? Wait and see...
