#E3 NEWS! 1st day recap part 3

E3 2012 blogposts continue!
Now with more scifi and returning classics!
First up a look at the upcoming Halo 4!
Microsoft said a lot regarding this one. I'm sure everyone's got their own opinion on this game.
I just hope it gets a more science fiction-ysh and interesting story (not just something fanboys notice, but something mind blowing and engaging for everyone!).

Something closer to Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay rather than Quake 3 Arena hopefully - story-wise.

It certainly looks impressive visually!

~

Tomb Raider is back!
Yay!
It's a reboot!
Nay...

Anyways, this new game will take some cues from recent adventure/platformer games such as Assassin's Creed and Uncharted.
More cinematic, it does look quite impressive. I'd have preferred the series to continue on Crystal Dynamic's Legends/Anniversary/Underworld's path. At least we still got them behind the series, right?

It does look stunning!
And quite "Next Gen" if I may say so.

It doesn't look that far from past TR game though. Only sans the jumping around.

~

RE is back with Resident Evil 6!
Tons of new details regarding the new story have surfaced!

The atmosphere seems to draw some inspiration from both past and present RE games.
The game looks graphically gorgeous, much better than the series ever been so far.

New villain, Ada Wong back, Sherry all grown up and it seems we'll get about 6 lead characters this time around!
This one will be out on October 2 for both Xbox 360 and PS3.

~

Activision's Transformers: Fall of Cybertron is back on the frontline with an all-new badass video:

Robots, giant robots, dinosaur robots... And lotsa lasers!
Looks like everything Michael Bay's movie should have been in the first place!

Definitively something worth keeping an eye on.

~

And that's it for this post!

Blog! Tomb Raider rebooted

Since I wasn't a big fan of the whole reboot idea, nor the change of genre (the recent co-op Xbox live game Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light was a spinoff, easy to accept just from its name),
until now, I've kept my doubts and didn't even want to blog about this upcoming game.

But with the recent E3 and news surrounding the game... Finally jumped on this new game.
First with the launch trailer and then with some actual footage.
What do we know so far.
Good points. Negative points. My opinion so far.

I'd like to point out I'm not actually even a fan of the Tomb Raider series.
Didn't play any o' them until quite recently.

I never cared much for Core Design's Tomb Raider series. I recognise them as important entries for the platforming genre, they were able to expand the genre in the 3-dimensional graphic era. They kept a simple and basic core gameplay pure and perfect. It was all about exploring huge areas in a non-linear way, grabbing objects, finding secrets. Raiding tombs as the title says.
Lara Croft became a huge icon of videogames in the 90s.

But for some reason the clunky combat mechanics they tried to have (lock-on shooting, multiple agressors in the forms of wild animals or soldiers), the chaotic camera which was much more suited for PC gaming than on consoles where most played those games and the fact I really missed seeing Core back on their former Chuck Rock series...
Let's just sayI decided to skip this series.

Then the games got darker and edgier, more combat than exploration... I knew it was doomed after a while.
It sort died with Angel of Darkness in 2003.
When platformers where sort of back and much more better with, say, Ubisoft Prince of Persia series.
The series seemed buried once and for all with its antique engine.

Then Eidos put the series in the hands of another of my favorite studios, Crystal Dynamics. The former-Gex team reimagined the franchise on a brand new game engine, feature brand new gameplay mechanics, new graphics up-to-date finally and a whole new history/timeline/canon/call it what you want.

That's when I decided to finally play a Tomb Raider game, with Tomb Raider Legends.
Over the course of this little trilogy, with Anniversary and Underworld, Crystal Dynamics was able to pursue the series genre, remake the old and explore the new with new entries both faithful to the series and improving over past episodes.
All those three games are all platformers at heart, but much more acrobatic than the originals, more fast paced, etc..
The plot is kinda strange on some parts, but much more coherent.
The fighting is still here but more practical.
And they were getting better and better graphically, true to this generation. Perhaps not "Unreal"-modern, not as realistic but I call this on the game's comic book-ysh stylicized character designs. Which I like. (I'm sick of all modern "next gen" games looking alike, boring and realistic)

Now the owners of the series want to reboot the IP. (Square Enix)
Which I'm kinda fine with.
It's okay to try finding a new audience, revamp a franchise.

But do they really need to re-adapt the concept in a totally different genre?

The new game will now be more based around survival.
Probably around a little open-world-like Island as they've implied.

The gameplay will now be sort of what you'd find in Survival Horror games. The platforming will probably be inexistant or absent.

The story will be rebooted.
It's kinda soon I think, so close to the recent reboot... Couldn't they find a way to continue the series?
Or is this a prequel sort of  thing?

Lara Croft's much more younger. (but she's already been seen around that age in past game's flashback sequences)

I'm okay with the redesign. Less of a "sex symbol" (which she wasn't much in the past trilogy either)
But don't call tell me they didn't try to give her some sex-appeal, there clearly is on the pictures above.
Just, not the same over-the-top kinda way of the original games.

So far, I'm honestly okay with these changes that don't affect the gameplay.
Plot rewritten? Alright..
New modern realistic look? Sure, whatever...
Reboot/origin story? Okay...

But did they need to make a completely different style of game?
This looks like either Square Enix forced the IP Tomb Raider over a new original game or they're forcing the series to completely change for the "taste of the moment".

Here's some more screenshots:

Like I said, the game's looking nice so far, but it doesn't feel or look like a Tomb Raider game at all.

Anyway, the game is in the hands of the guys at Crystal Dynamics, just for that I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.
They surely know what they're doing.
The game will be good anyway.

But it doesn't seem to be a real Tomb Raider... It doesn't seem to warrant the use of only "Tomb Raider" on its title. And if this bombs, commercially, they'll probably end up reverting to the original genre.
Either way, it looks like a misuge of ressources, they could have called this "Lara Croft and the mystery of the dark island" or something different and original.

It was Crystal Dynamics who made me like the series, which made me check out past games (such as the original Core Design Tomb Raider, on the Sega Saturn).

Here's some gameplay footage to close this topic:

It looks like a cross between Uncharted (for the look, the feel, the style) and Cold Fear (for the substance, the gameplay, the genre)....

E3 NEWS! lots MOAR trailers PartII

Here's a bunch of new trailers from some announcement straight from this year's E3 expo :P
(with my own comments and view on all that)
First off, let's start with Ninja Gaiden 3. The first modern NG to be made by the new Team Ninja without its ol' chief Itagaki, and Tecmo.

Looks decent enough so far. Kinda good looking hack & slash game.
And the first one to be uncensored on the PS3 (so far all PS3 NG conversions had been cut on the bloody aspect)
Kinda generic, but I'm sure fans will like this one.

And now, some gameplay footage from Bethesda Softworks & id Software first game under new partnership, RAGE!

Nice, very nice!
Love how iD updated their engine.
Looking deep, beautiful and quite fun. Hope it doesn't get boring or too gimmicky near its second half (of the game).

Meanwhile Peter Molyneux gets creative with his franchise and offers us this interview:

I've never been interested much in this series, but with Fable: The Journey it seems Microsoft Game Studios and Lionhead Studiosare trying to destroy a series with some potential into a generic Kinect kiddie rail shooter... And a poorly inspired one at that :P

And now, the launch trailer for Techland's Dead Island!

A very interesting zombie game that I'd suggest you keep an eye on :P
Not quite "multiplayer random" like L4D (which is good enough for what it is, calm down L4D fans!!).
Not quite "single player sandbox" like the Dead Rising games.
Seems like a good mix of both. And some survival aspects to it (few ammo to manage, scarce health around, etc..)

Microsoft continues to try selling us their Kinect, now with some more actual games
and
licenses!

It's Kinect Star Wars!
It's a bit laggy!
It's probably just a cutscene playing on the background with a guy mimicking/making us think he's actually playing.
Anyway, as much a fan of SW as I am, you'll need to do much better than that to convert me to Kinect. *goes back to playing Master System Star Wars*

Here's the first gameplay video ever of the upcoming rebooted Tomb Raider in the hands of Square Enix. (with Crystal Dynamics still working on the game itself)

Alright this looks lovely, graphically speaking.
But let's be honest.. this isn't Tomb Raider anymore! (and I wasn't that a big fan of this series anyway! apart from all 3 Crystal Dynamics modern games)
It isn't simply a platforming game anymore. But a survival horror. Which makes this game seem even more generic (that's what I say when they force down franchises on different paths..)
Why didn't they call this "Lara Croft and the ..." something-something like the Xbox live spinoff, or simply "Lara Croft".
Ugh...

On HALO's side, Microsoft Game Studios thinks it's time to remember us that the Halo franchise exists...with a remake of the Xbox original in Halo Anniversary!

Was it really necessary? I doubt it...
But this generation seems to have a problem checking past work, just see how many reboots/remakes there is, across any medium!
Specially with the original being not that far graphically (it isn't a PS1 game you know!) and being fully playable on any Xbox 360... (AND it being available on the Xbox live/PC as well...)
At least they said it won't be full price.

But don't worry, if a fully priced new game is what you want...

Here's Halo 4!
The first one not being developed by creator studio Bungie.
What annoys me already (in this gaming market saturated by unoriginal ideas and sequels): It's the dawn of a new trilogy.
Fanboys cry, kids weep, llamas graze.

Here's to change our ideas:

Twisted Pixel's Ms. 'Splosion Man overview trailer!
Fun, looking awesome.

(E3 trailers to be continued....)

E3 NEWS! Trailers

With the E3 convention on, I thought it was best to start sharing some of the new (upcoming) games trailers.
FPS, platformers, beat 'em alls, fighting games, we got 'em all!
From sequels to adaptations...it seems original titles are making scarce with the time..
First up, to open up this thread, here's Duke Nukem Forever launch trailer!
The game is being finished by Gearbox Software:

Totally unexpected, here's a sequel for Metro 2033, Metro: Last Light. Once again by 4A Games/THQ.

Bethesda & Human Head Studios' Prey 2 has a brand new CGi trailer.
And we're now sure it's gonna be an open world game....ughh... another one? Looks so far off the original, couldn't they name it something else?

Activision offers another look at Spider-Man: Edge of Time. And it was goshdarn' time for it! :/
Behold the first appearance of Anti-Venom in a videogame!
How much time before they finally make a 2099-only game?

Konami released a new teaser hinting at a new mysterious Contra game!

Duke Nukem's "brother" series, Serious Sam is back!
In Serious Sam 3! Woot! Croteam is aiming for a September 30 release.

NeverDead.
I have absolutely no idea what this is. This Konami game, for Xbox 360 and PS3, looks like an anime-ysh Deus Ex in 3rd person.

The twisted American McGee's Alice is back!
In Alice: Madness Returns by Electronic Arts. The original game will be available on the same disc!

Here's the Tomb Raider reboot I refused to blog-post about until now.
This attempt by Square Enix to control and redesign the series is for the first time seen in motion...in a CGi trailer.
Seems like Square Enixis trying to sell us a completely different concept they just slapped the TR name over.

And finally (for now), the last trailer.
Namco's brand new Soul Calibur V. The gameplay debut trailer!
"Two mystical blades clash for an ultimate battle" for the 6th time! Looks like more of the same. They better fix all the problems and boring feel SC4 had...

NEWS! Superhero on TV, Abrams' new show and Lara Croft Tomb Diablo?

Hello guys and gals!

Here's some new stuff coming soon on our TVs, computer screens and/or gaming systems -

The Spoiler..? Oh, nope. It's just a dude playing Batman with a cheap costume :P

First of all, here's a glimpse at J.J.Abrams new show.

Undercovers.
It looks like something more in the line of Alias rather than a scifi/mystery/drama like Lost or Fringe.
But then... Alias did have destiny/end of the world/prophecy theories with Milo Rambaldi!

Here's a synopsis straight from NBC: "[A] married couple called back into spy action after years away"

It may turn out pretty good, but I never really been into Spy stuff that much...

On the gaming part, there's a video of the new Lara Croft game!
Lara Croft, not Tomb Raider, as in spinoff of the future new reboot.

This is just a light Xbox live arcade-type of game.
It's part of the Square Enix reboot of the franchise since they aquired Eido.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light will be a top view Diablo-like game.
It will re-introduce Lara Croft in something different, since there's a future game rebooting the franchise coming up soon.

Seriously, why didn't they follow Crystal Dynamics previous 3 games? Why another reboot??
I liked those 3 Tomb Raider games! (Legends, Anniversary and Underworld)
At least it will be still made by Crystal D.
But is a reboot necessary (they already confirmed it, it will be darker, more realistic à la Batman Begins)

Looks...gimmick-y.

Finally there's a Super hero TV show coming.
Yep.

It looks like all those comic book adaptations, great sales with Green Lanter comics, Watchmen and Kickass finally got an impact on TV.

Azrael!!!... wait, no... It is the same guy playing the cheap Batman again...

The Cape will be a show about a cop who used to read comics to his son, who gets framed.
He dresses like a superhero to have his revenge...or something.
The pilot will air sometime midseason next year.

Here's some preview.
It has that Batman/Punisher vibe but watch for yourself.
It may turn out pretty good, even if the guy's called "the Cape" or that his costume looks like a cheap cross between the Assassin's Creed main characters and Batman...

Interview of "The Cape" aka David Lyons
