ComicPanelsOfTheWeek: Countdown to Irwin Schwab

So I've been reading lots of "Elseworlds" DC Comics.
And by lots I mean tons of 'em.
And by tons I mean in the 30s of them, no doubt.


And who do I find amongst the alternate realities-characters while reading the latest story I had under the hand today?

That's right! Amongst the dozen or so characters they tend to always use (Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, GL, Flash, etc..) and the ones the authors on this story played with for a change (Big Barda, Jade, Dr. Mid-nite,etc.) - Tom Simmons, Matt Haley and Barbara Kesel did an Elseworld-Ambush Bug!!!

How very random, unusual and odd choice....but I loved it!
Glad to see Irwin making it into one of these comics for a change!

Deleted Scenes - Gotham by Gaslight game

Okay, here's another one that never was.

Apparently, there was a Gotham by Gaslight video game planned at some point.
That's right, a game based on the classic Elseworld story by Brian Augustyn, BATMAN: GOTHAM BY GASLIGHT:

And it was just recently revealed by Day 1 Studio that they had been working on this concept around 2009.
But they lost THQ as publishers (this was before Warner Bros. recently started publishing its games directly), tried redesigning their game and pitch...

Anyway, this was planned for PS3 and Xbox 360.

It looks like an era-specific Arkham Asylum/beat'em up-like game.

Certainly, this was a very early test, but the idea, steampunk look and with the adapted weapons and gimmicks do look nice on paper at least.

Who knows, perhaps when DC/Warner will get bored with the Arkham Asylum/City series, they might actually think about adapting Elseworld comics into video games. There's lots of great concept to use in those!

Deleted Scenes - What if... DC-Mangaverse

Comic book artist Cliff Chiang revealed on Project Rooftop he had been working on a manga/anime-inspired take on the Justice League...

Just imagine what it could have been...

This entire project ended up getting us the Super Young Team which was a team of characters inspired by the DCU's Great Ten and American Superheroes (pictured above).

But at some point, behind the scenes, it was gonna be more literal, a team of young Japanese heroes directly inspired by the Justice League itself.

All of these heroes would have been modeled after cult classic Japanese proprieties.
Cliff Chiang tells how it almost was green-light...

So whaddya think of all this?
Man..it could have been so awesome! Since there's a lack of Elseworlds tales nowadays, I would have loved to see DC launch a spinoff line like Marvel's Mangaverse!
Someone needs to kick the ass of whoever didn’t approve this....

Outcast Studios - LIVE DRAW NIGHT December 2011

Hi guys!
Yesterday evening was my 4th participation in the Outcast forums all-new "Live Draw Nights" for this quarter!
(You can find all my previous blogs by either following my meme tag or checking out the following links for the LDN February 2011, LDN May 2011 & LDN September 2011)

This weekend was yet another rude sessions of sketching, sketching and even more sketching!
Like before, I tried to keep my Twitter account updated as I went along.

If you're just joining me and don't know in what this LDN art jam challenge consists, it was roughly 4 hours long of various challenge thrown at us.
It's kinda like being in a "virtual convention" with various online members of the Outcast forums, getting various different challenges every hour and having to quickly (either digitally or traditionally) draw a lot of random characters.
It's a real challenging practice.
It was fun to get all together and draw, draw, draw! Keep our senses sharp and our hand fast. A great way to work your skills if you will!

Like the previous times, we had a great time. Various characters and fun ideas during the night.
Just trying to keep up is a fun challenge in itself!~

Now, let's dig into yesterday's entries!
Hour ONE
HOUR ONE was a nice warm-up.
Simply, 10 minute/sketches coming for an hour!

We started with one of Outcasts' own creations, The Checkeredman!
Great way to get things started.

The Batwoman!
Since we only had 10 minutes for these, I decided to go the simplistic route

Le Marquis, from a French bande dessinée, from what I gather.
Never heard of the guy. Fun design though.

Dr. Manhattan.
Fun one to draw I gotta say.

...and that was the last one for this "HOUR".

[BREAK!! BREAK!! EVERYONE TAKE A BREAK!!]
This was the time to walk around a sec'. 10 minutes break for everyone at this point.

Hour TWO
Hour two consisted in two 30 min. sketches.
With a twist!
2 selected characters fighting random foes.

The first random subject was Blueberry & Lone Wolf (and Cub)  versus Violent Cowboys!
Was getting carried with this one..
I had this epic western scene pictured in my mind.

..and the 2nd drawing was Lobo & Judge Anderson (from Judge Dredd) against, I quote, "homicidal telekinetic Toddlers", I kid you not.

[BREAK!! BREAK!! EVERYONE TAKE A BREAK!!]

Hour THREE
HOUR THREE - It consisted in a longer 50 minutes drawing of Ghost in the Shell's main protagonist.

Motoko Kusanagi.
The idea was to either emulate this reference pic of a cosplayer or simply the character she was representing.

Hour FOUR
Fourth - and last final hour.
A drawing with a twist!
The subject was a steampunk'd version of one of the proposed characters. We had a whole hour for this one.

I decided to select the DK2 Batman & Robin, just for kicks

And that was all for this night!
Our next session will be in March, from what I gather.
All in all, it was a pretty fun challenge to keep up with :D

Score!!! Free swag~ (episode 3)

So my local comic store is finally closing doors....on its old address and moving some blocks away!

For that occasion they were cutting prices, like a lot!
And selling off stuff for ridiculously small prices..
And giving stuff away...

Anyway, figurines, CD and DVDs didn't grab much my attention.
I wasn't gonna grab stuff I wasn't looking for in the first place. (that's the way to end up with tons of useless stuff you don't really want)
Instead I was looking through comic book boxes and searching for series that interested me or issues I was missing. (not like some nerds I saw going away with WHOLE darn' boxes! what will they do with that stuff? sell it on ebay?? probably...)

Anyway I was looking specifically for Young Justice, Birds of Prey, Batgirl or Spider-girl issues... Only found 1 single Young Justice! -sigh- :(
(and another one I already had...in my only 5-6 issues I have currently)
Someone probably got away with a box from the end of the alphabet. (probably some Wolverine or X-men fanboy..)
I found a ton of Spider-man, Batman, X-men books..but not really interested in getting more of those. (I'd rather read some Batman in TPB instead)
Found some Amazing Fantasy/Araña, which is no Mayday Parker, but nice nonetheless.
No Spider-girl this time.
Old Green Arrow issues, some What if..., some Elseworlds, an Azrael....
Only one issue of Superman/Batman I really wanted, one of the parts of the Metal Men crossover! (I luv the Metal Men!)

Biggest surprise/catch?
The Great Lakes Christmas Special! (which I'm currently reading as I write these lines)
FantastAwesomEpic!

And that is all...
I'll miss the ol' comic book store.
The new one will be farthest from home but closer from work. (guess I know where I'll be spending my time at lunch)
