Design - Samurai Pizza Cats cartmodd custom cover art

This is the cover & label I did for yet another cartmodd. This one was for a Pal fan-port of the unreleased Japanese-only Samurai Pizza Cats game.

I adore this one!
Very fun Mega Man-like title. Glad I can finally play it on my own Nes instead of emulation!

Please! Do not ask for these! This was a personal job, not outsourcing the work to other people. If you want me to work out something for you, I will do so for money only~

ComicPageOfTheWeekend: Battle of the Planets

Here's a beautiful painting by Alex Ross for a Gatchaman miniseries that never came out, supposed to closethe TOP COW on-going series. (which I might talk about on this blog at some point, being a Tatsunoko fan and all that~)

MR Yatterman

A new movie review for the day!
I really wanted to make this one for quite some time...
Finally managed to find some time for it now~

Movie: Yatterman
Directed by Takashi Miike
Release date 2009
Genre anime live/action comedy
Country Japan

This crazy movie was made by Takashi Miike, who's one of my favorite movie directors, it's a live adaptation of the long running anime franchise Yatterman.

First off,
What exactly is Yatterman?

It's an ol' seventies anime series that itself was part of a much larger franchise called the Time Bokan series.
It was part of the programs done by animation studio Tatsunoko Production (mostly known by gamers nowadays thanks to the Capcom "Vs. series" of fighting games). Which itself has done hundreds and hundreds of series, though they're mostly known in Japan, Asia South America, Europe and North Africa. Yep, they've never been quite popular in the North America (apart from the couple of different traductions of Gatchaman/Battle of the Planets).

Anyway, back on Yatterman, like most "Time Bokan" animes, was about a duo of Superheroes having to deal and defeat every week a trio of ineffectual villains.
(most of Tatsunoko animes are about japanese superheroes, like Gatchman, Samurai Pizza Cats, Casshern, etc..)
Every time they would try to steal/catch/conquer something, and every time, the heroes would come, fight them giant robot to giant robots and win the day.

How would a movie based on such a looney premise work, live action?

Our heroes! Yatta-yatta-yatta-Man!

Our story opens with (yet) a(nother) fight between the Dorombo Gang, the evil team who always tries to steal artifacts/make money/collect all the pieces of the Skull Stone, and the local superheroes of Tokyoko (fictive Tatsunoko city), Yatterman-1 and Yatterman-2!

Who are all these characters? The movie takes its time to introduce us to all of them directly into the action.
The Yatterman duo operates from under the "Takada Toys" building. Gan Takada, aka Yatterman-1, lives a double life of a crime-fighting hero and tries to protect the world from all the evil-doers. In his quest for truth and justice he's helped by his girlfriend, Ai Kaminari/Yatterman-2 and several giant robotic toys his father left him, Yatterwan a giant red mecha and Omocchama their own sidekick.

Meanwhile the Dorombo Gang needs to complete the Skull Stone, which is a mysterious artifact their own "spirit boss" has them searching for.
This evil trio is composed of Doronjo, the sexy leader, Boyacky, the smartest of the two henchmen and mad scientist in love with Doronjo, and finally the big brute and glutton-lackey Tonzura.

They all fight, mechas against mechas, explosions, and at the end the heroes win the day once more time!

When a girl seeks the helps of our heroes. Her father (a brillian parody/homage of Indiana Jones, may I add-), they decide they'll join her in her search for answers.
But not far from that, it seems the Dorombo Gang is dangerously close to reunite the Skull Stone and help their mysterious chief-entity enter our world.
Now that all seems to be getting dangerously close, do all these plots share a common menace?
Who really is this "Dokurobei"?
Is Ai jaleous of Gan-chan's popularity with this movie's other girls?
Will Boyacky confess his love for Doronjo?
And why am I narrating this like a Saturday morning cartoon's voiceover??

The original "Team Rocket".

You see, this is not a very serious movie.
But you know what, that's exactly why I love this movie and why you will also. (if you haven't seen it already)
Takashi Miike is usually more known for his violent, gory or realistic action movies and thrillers.
But for this movie, he perfectly catched the original anime's sillyness and crazyness.

It's colorful, fun, fresh and quite dynamic.

The movie uses a ton of (pretty neat) special effects. Of course, it's not your usual Hollywood-CGi if you're only used to American blockbuster movies. But they're pretty well done and impressive nonetheless.

The movie takes the anime's spirit and adapts it into a full feature movie. It even ends with a note "On the next episode..." (at this time it doesn't have a sequel nor do I think such sequel would really follow that fake-plot hint).
It has that episodic feel. This is a big epic storyline, with a big epic threat maybe, but nothing less to expect from our heroes!

The movie also contains several songs, what you'd expect from, say, a cartoon (Disney) movie.
They're in-fact songs adapted from the anime itself (opening, ending and villain themes).
With the usual japanese-zaniness twist.

Overall, I really recommend to check out this movie!
If you like animes, japanese movies or even just Superheroes. It might be fun a try, to see what other countries offer to the genre ;)

It also works great as introduction to the show(s) for those who didn't knew a thing about Yatterman.

You can just as easily dip into the 70s or modern Yatterman animes.

Also if you liked Tatsunoko characters (in the game Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom game for exemple), it's a great way to show them in action.

The music, the score and songs are perfect.
The directing is well done. For such an usually intimate director, it's well done on the more action-fuelled large scale battles.

Of course, the movie isn't without its own problems.
It's a world that doesn't make much sense (they travel at the speed of light across the Earth around stereotypical "parodical places"), the ending is a bit confusing plot-wise (compared to much simpler and funnier first half) and it may be too japanese for people who only watch Transformers, Twilight and those other Pirate of the Carribeans films.

But personally, I love it!
Give it a try and you'll probably end up loving it~

I give it:
 2.5 / 3 Astroboys!

Manga NEWS! Battle of the Planets - reborn!

You probably wouldn't guess it... but I'm a huuuuuuuuuge Gatchaman/Battle of the Planets fan!!

Now, I'm not here to talk about the classic anime series...or the great comic book revival. But about the CGi movie that has been in development hell for a very long time.

IMAGI studio's been on this CGi Gatchaman movie since 2004.
Then had problems with licensing...
So they released TMNT instead before.
Later, a teaser/trailer was shown after that... But they started having monetary troubles..
So they had a more profitable Astroboy movie out which helped them survive for a while.
And they almost went bankrupt in 2009.
The movie couldn't hit theaters this year (of 2010) as announced... But thanks to new investors, the Gatchaman CGi movie is back on track~

Slated for a 2011 release now, they have put up a new sneak peak teaser online at their own website!

Woow! It looks..fun! Great!
Love the design, simplistic tones and bright colors!
Also the Gatchaman(s) look great!
Specially the costume, a lot closer to their original design~

Here's the previous teaser trailer that was shown at the Anime Expo 2009:

It was darker, closer to TMNT.
I didn't like their costume in this one, too dark, hi-tech and similar to their design in the 90s Gatchaman OVA.

And finally for the fun, a teaser from 2007:

Gatchaman GO!!

"A world in chaos, an alien evil, a lone warrior is found, earth's last hope, five shall rise - Gatchaman."

We need another Tatsunoko vs. Capcom

Warning: this is a little "conversion" from an old dA discussion which I thought had its place in this blog as well.

Since a new "VS series" is coming from Capcom, Marvel vs Capcom 3, I was thinking...
We should totally get another TvC at some point.
Or else, it will look like Capcom was just testing the market, if fans were all waiting for another MvC game, and Tatsunoko was just a little warm-up for the new MvC.

And it isn't.
It's a very fun game, very dynamic and nervous, which may look simple and a bit simplified but is pretty deep when you go for it and play it several times on harder difficulty and online!

Look at that! All the current VS game I got from Capcom (and SNK!)

My favorites are probably SNK vs Capcom, Capcom vs Snk 2, Tatsunoko VS Capcom and Marvel Vs Capcom 2 : P

I love the gameplay in TvC! The graphics are pretty nice for a Wii! A lot better than you'd thought! And the gamespeed... It's pretty awesome to have a nervous fighter like that around, I love it!!
I'm one of those old school fans that was kinda disappointed that KOF12, Street fighter 4 and Tekken 6 were slower than the previous installments in their respective series, but this crossover is pretty fast paced!
(SSF4 did correct it a bit more, a welcomed upgrade to SF4 in my eyes and I expect KOF13 to do the same)

Now, my only complaint is that there isn't enough characters in TvC!

"Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars" has been a nice upgrade to "Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Cross Generation of Heroes ". Not quite a sequel nor just an international release. It has been a bit like TvC 1.5.

All the Marvel vs Capcom versions had more characters (counting upgrades from early Xmen games to the vs Street fighter ones!)
And this game got no excuse, it uses 3D models, meaning easier/faster to work on. Unlike 2D sprites which are a lot more complex to do and it takes quite some time to make modern sprites! (the reason why everybody other than SNK and Arc System went 3D nowadays....)

The cast's already pretty nice, but I would have liked a bit more, just a tiny bit more.
Here's my own ADDITINAL CHARACTERS and my explanation below...
(I'm talking from an European point of view, were other Tatsunoko series are known over the Speed Racers-only in America)

Bring in those guys in TvC 3! (or TvC 2... call it whatever you want!)

Hakushon Daimaō from "The Genie Family". He was cut from this new release.... He was inTatsunoko VS Capcom's first release and was cut...for no reason (there's tons of excuse/rumors...). Also called Bob in a bottle or Robert in France. He was one of Tatsunoko old school more populars characters and was shown across Europe (France, Spain, Portugal...) and Arabic countries (Egypt,...)

On Capcom side's I would have liked to see Zangief! Why? Good analogue big powerful character! Also has been in non-Street fighter games! He's even in POCKET FIGHTER! A chibi super deformed Capcom fighter!

I would have liked to see all the 5 Gatchaman!! Why?? Because it's Tatsunoko most well known series! And those other 2 heroes would have played pretty different from the already 3 Gatchamen! Don't forget there's gonna be a brand new CGi Gatchaman movie (in 2011) from Imagi studios soon! And in the previous Marvel VS Capcom crossovers there's like all the AVENGERS team!!

2 Action/Survival Capcom would have been nice over the other Gatchamen, and since zombies related Jill was already used in the last VS, Dante from Devil May Cry (not a fan but you gotta recon' the popularity) and Regina from Dino Crisis characters would have been nice!

Racer X from Speed Racers! Now I'm not a fan of this show, but you gotta acknowledge its popularity in America! There's been a modern live american movie, an US 3D show... America loves Speed Racer (or only knows this Tatsunoko franchise), and since I can't imagine the kid fighting, RACER X could have made it, even using his car in Ultra attacks!

Nathan-the bionic commando- could have make a quite interesting fighting character. Like Racer X, using his originality in attacks! He could have used his recent look or old school one, I like both!

Samurai Pizza Cats... Probably Tatsunoko's most well known show over the whole world! Not as popular as Speed Racer or loved as Gatchaman but even more spread over all countries! There's been said that Tatsunoko didn't let Capcom use them.. not this time? Only Yattarô would have been needed! The others, like with Doronjo, could have been used in Ultras!

Sexy Silvia? Yep! Another Viewtful Joe character! Is that a problem?? The cast lacks some feminine representants anyway... She could have been used in duo with Joe!

Now's the funny and random interesting ones!

Pinocchio - one of the early most loved series from Pinocchio! Don't know it? you're probably too young... This show has been around in the end 70's and was one of my favorite Pinocchio's interpretations! I'm hearing you guys cry "BUT!... It's lame!" What? the wooden doll lame?? Imagine his attacks! He could have been quite funny! The show's very well known to us, 20s-something! It has been shown in America, France, Spain, Italy, Russia, Egypt, China, England,etc... One of the early Tatsunoko productions to be shown outside japan! He deserved it!
Pinocchio is probably also a character on public domain, so no problem there I guess.
I specially love the opening theme! (it was the same in most languages just translated)

And finally, equally funny, Capcom's first mascot, Captain Commando! Used a lot in Capcom's merchandising, game manuals, ads,etc.. And had an decent beat 'em all game... He was in Marvel VS Capcom and should have been here too!

Now, what d'you guys and gals think? Other ideas? Agree? Comment below!

8 Bit music - Pizza Cats, Mazingaaah Zetto and Do-ronbooooo!

Hello gang!
Remember that post a while ago?
Here's 3 more old "8 bit interpretations" I've uploaded on my youtube account some months ago.
Once again, all done with the program FL Studio 8 with the plugin magical8bit!

Samurai Pizza Cats 8 bit

This one is dated from 26 juillet 2009.
First of all, I'd say this one's of my few favorite interpretations. I usually don't like looking back at what I've done some time after. Be it drawings, music, etc...
But this one sounds still pretty decent to me now.
A bit harder to get right, I played a long time in FL studio to get the sound and rythm that way.

Mazinger Z theme song 8 bit

From 29 septembre 2009.
More Mazingaaah! I love all the catchy original japanese songs the whole Mazinger series used!
I had to do this one!

Tensai Doronbo 8 bit

23 mars 2010.
I gotta admit, I don't really like looking back at this one... Could have been a lot better.. Some background "voices" are pretty bad. I should have used other ways to replicate those sounds... (maybe use less tracks, less sounds...)

That's all I've done so far!
So stay tuned, if I do more, you guys and gals on this blog will be the first to know of it! (with the other 2 guys watching my youtube account)

What did ya do this weekend?

Hey gang!
Another week, another "What did you do this weekend?"-thing!

I didn't play that much thins weekend...
Mostly read stuff.
Like Bande dessinée and some comics. : P

'Been reading the Brave and the Bold current comic series lately, by Mark Waid.
It's a really fun team-up comic series with bits of sci-fi and adventure all over.

This weekend's I've been on the volume 3 of the paperbacks, called "Demons and Dragons".
It was Mark Waid's last issues, sad news :(
I hope this series will not lose its pulp-fun-adventurous atmosphere for a more serious, dark and big-event-crossovers aspect!

This last volume was probably the best story-arc so far! You don't need too much DC Comics knowledge to enjoy this!
Fun read!

On the gaming part, I've started playing Alan Wake with my bro!
Very original and interesting game! It's from an European developer I love, Remedy Software.
The game looks and feels like a mix of Max Payne with Survival horrors - gameplay wise.

The game really shines in its originality and story.
What Max Payne was to Noir Love stories, Alan Wake does the same and then some to thrillers/drama TV shows.
Max Payne was constructed like and told through a comic book approach.
Alan Wake use the TV drama construction. Many questions thrown at you, a well thought plot revealed bit by bit and it chapters is an episode in itself with everything it implies. Theme, mini-arc, tension culminating with a cliffhanger and even a recap at the beginning of each chapter!

It looks, feels and plays great!
I much prefer a game like this, playable, with a cinematic feel than something, say, like Heavy Rain which is pretty similar in an opposite way, cinematic with a gaming aspect.

To each their own, I guess!
Plus it's nice to see a "blockbuster game" from Europe for once! It's like all games are either American (or rather Canadian) or Japanese now! -__-

Other than that?
I only played Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena.
For a while now, I've really wanted to go back to Vin Diesel's Scifi media-franchise Chronicles of Riddick.

I already watched again Pitch Black, a great horror scifi movie, not unlike the first Alien.
I wanted to play again Escape from Butcher Bay, a cult classic Xbox game that really shined when it was released back then, for it's great immersive universe, fun gameplay and great visuals!
But my Xbox re-died lately ("she" does that once in  a while...Yeah. Weird stuff...)
So I took this as an opportunity to finally buy Dark Athena on the Xbox360, which contains a remake of Butcher Bay as well.

I love this game!!
Incredible!
It almost feels adventur-y! The game isn't 100% free open world but neither uses levels for the progression.
You're in a certain space with people to talk to, objectives and stuff to do and collect.
But it uses a FPS engine and view. Plus there's combat, weapons and lots of enemies, but you better be ready to sneak up on enemies one by one, with a clever infiltration/stealth gameplay.

It's quite unique!

Finally, I've been able to watch the Yatterman movie, thanks to the French dvd release!

One word: YATTAAAAA!!

It's a pretty amazing and faithful adaptation of the old Time Bokan anime series from Tatsunoko studios!
By Takashi Miike, nonetheless!
(recommanded watch: Zebraman, epic, heroic and aliens against a Zebra costumed middle aged hero, what could you ask more?!?)

Loved it! Takashi Miike said himsel, Americans are doing now Dragon Ball and many future adaptations. He had to show everybody how you really do an anime live!

Anyway, that's it for now!
Some reviews coming this week finally, if I stop being lazy : P
News in a sec'

Stay tuned for moooaaar-
