#E3 NEWS! 2nd day recap part 1

Time for a bunch more news and trailers regarding upcoming games!

First up, some actual footage of that ZombiU I posted about yesterday.

The gameplay is looking pretty neat!

It does really looks like a nice mix between Dead Island and Dead Rising, like I wrote yesterday.

And looking quite nice, to boot!

~

It seems the WiiU will be getting mostly late recycled titles. Assasssin's Creed 3, Mass Effect 3 (only 3s? no ME1 or 2?).
I dunno why but I don't imagine a new audience getting the same game later on. I'm pretty sure 99% of people buying ME3 for Wii u will already have play through it = ME fans buying yet another release.
Specially since it's the last part of the story without both ME1 & 2...

Anyway amongst these is a re-re-release of Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition.
Are people still interested in re-getting this one? Specially with the "Game of the Year: Edition" recently, doesn't everyone already own Batman?

The game seems to be mostly identical, besides some gimmicks that will use the controller-screen of the WiiU.
Beside, you can get the game in bargain bins pretty cheap most everywhere, not counting the cheap steam version for PC!

~

On Capcom's side, check out this kickass trailer of the upcoming Lost Planet 3!

~

Omega Force, the guys who made most of the Dynasty Warriors for Koei, and Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage for Eido, will be making another Hokuto no ken game!

The original game was mindless fun and pretty cool, but didn't it already cover the entire story?

Simply titled Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage 2 it sounds like more of the same kinda fun.

I can imagine this using inspiration from the "expanded universe" other continuations of the story, though I'd prefer to see some original story like that first Berserk game.

~

Speaking of Omega Force, that isn't all they're up to these days!
A One Piece beat 'em all game is also coming up this one published at Namco.

Though it will be a PS3-only title. (awwww... can we hope for an Xbox port either in the US or here in Europe? pwetty please with sugar on top?)

Dubbed One Piece: Pirate Warriors in the US and not Luffy's Rage like I expected, this One Piece: Kaizoku Musou is coming up for November this year.
And here's a new trailer:

Even though I won't be getting this, it does look pretty good.

~

More coming up in a few!~

MR Nausicaä

This week, let's look into what is considered the first Studio Ghibli movie (though it isn't!)
If you want to check out my previous reviews, follow the Ghibli-Marathon tag or simply click over the above picture!

Considered by many, a classic of the Japanese animations - for both fans of anime or not. Let's review Miyazaki's big independent debut...

Movie: Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
Directed by Hayao Miyazaki
Release date 1984
Genre Anime/fantasy adventure
Country Japan

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is a post-apocalyptic animated filmd written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, and produced by his long time friend and co-animator Isao Takahata, who had both been trying to launch their own anime studio for years.
Tired of all the usual commercial and cheap productions Japan had been producing for years, he experimented making movies for larger audiences with more mature content and serious production values.

The story of Nausicaä was actually based on a manga going by the same name, drawn and written by Miyazaki. Serialized from '82 to '94. it is about a princess from small kindom that is then brought into a war between empires. She tries to seek the coexistence between these different nations why preventing the humans own selfishness and ambitions from destroying nature in the process.
The movie is actually the adaptation (more or less) of the first chapters (2 of the 7 volumes).

Nausicaä is therefore an adaptation of a manga...which itself was originally inspired by the character Nausicaä from Homer's Odyssey. This character served as basis for Miyazaki's story. The daughter of King Alcinous, trying to bring back peace in the middle of a imperial war amongst nation.

But back on the movie itself, shall we?

The film tells the story of Nausicaä, a young girl, princess and fighter from the "Valley of the Wind" who gets involved in a struggle  between empires.

But let's start at the beginning first.
The story takes place a 1000 years after an apocalyptic event, called the "Seven Days of Fire", it was a cataclysmic war that destroyed both the planet's civilizations and ecosystem.
Now, there are Toxic Jungles all over the world, also called the Sea of Decay, where the air is toxic and there lies giant insects, the result of various evolutions and aberrations, nature's answer to man's destruction.

Nausicaä lives in this Valley of the Wind that is a place relatively protected from the toxic spores thanks to the air coming from the ocean.
A wise and mysterious man who lives there from time to time, called Master Yupa, is searching for the "Man in Blue", he who will unite the people back with nature. To help him out, Nausicaä goes on exploration, searching from jungle to jungle and beyond the desert for this mysterious savior.
She uses this flying glider, a Möwe, to move around.

Nausicaä is actually sort of able to talk to these giant insect creatures and would love to see peace returning to the world..
She is particularly found of the "insect kings", the Ohmus/Ômus (depending on the version of the film).

One day, a giant airship crashes near the Valley.
Nausicaä notices it and tries to rescue a little girl she sees aboard.
The villagers soon find out it is the princess Lastelle of Pejite.

Which brings war to the peaceful village.

The war is still going between various rival kingdoms. A military flying ship from the Tolmekia (/Tolmek/Tolmèque) Empire comes around.

Nausicaä discovers an embroy of a Giant Warrior in the first crashed airship - which are dangerous weapons created by man from the old war.
Lastelle was actually trying to destroy the monster, these embryos need to be destroyed!

But the empire Tolmekian wants to resort to what originally destroyed the world in their conflict against the Dork Empire.
The Princess Kushana and General Kurotowa invade the valley for the embryo...

Meanwhile, Nausicaä finds out the jungle is actually toxic because of what people did to the ground, plants actually grow in water beneath the sand and jungle.

The Tolmekia kingdom tries to use an ancient weapon too soon, to fend off from an Omhu attack...
Nausicaä must stop the Tolmekians from killing these insects, the survival of the planet depends on it!

Let's simply say it, Nausicaä is a gorgeous looking animated movie, with great animation quality, an amazing atmosphere and feel, a mature tone, fantastic orchestral music compositions and a great story to boot.

Miyazaki and his very competent staff did the impossible, made Japanese animation relevant again and popular worldwide with both fans and critics alike.

The movie's production was done in a record time of under 10 months (!!!) for a budget of about 1 million $USD, which at the time was a lot and without precedent.

It helped establish the Studio Ghibli, which would be the home of various other Miyazaki and Takahata films for the following decades. That is why it actually is often considered part of Ghibli's filmography and legacy.
It went on to win several prizes and breached  various records of the JKapanese box office and worldwide as well.

Originally Tokuma Shoten wanted to turn Miyazaki's Nausicaä manga into a movie, but Miyazaki preferred to take the occasion to do so himself. It was then released by Toei on March 1984.

There's a lot of Takahata as well as Miyazaki in this movie.
It really is a joint effort to launch their Studio Ghibli.
There's a lot of inspiration both brought in from their previous productions. Be it from Lupin or Horus. Mostly esthetically.
And as fantastic as it is, it is a story of characters before anything.
Ghibli's first leading female heroine, a model for generations to come.

Overall, it is a must see, simple as that.
Beautiful gorgeous looking, great and entertaining.

It's a movie for all, all ages and wherever you come from. It's an universal kind of story.
People fighting for peace, people raging war, nature being ignored and caught in the middle.
Environmentalist and meaningful.

But please, I will add this to this conclusion, please don't watch the butchered US translation from the late 90s - also re-released on DVD for some reason.
Avoid the version of the movie translated under the name Warriors of the Wind at all cost!!
It was heavily edited and modified to be more "manly" and less "girly" as stereotypical 80s American cartoon companies would have put it. Avoid this release!!

Anyways, Nausicaä is a must watch!

I give it:
2.5 / 3 DonPatchis!

Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock - Recap!

So I finally managed to watch that new Dragon Ball Z "TV Special" short movie produced recently produced by Toei for this year's Jump Festa.

How was it? Well, I honestly found it rather pleasant, a nice surprise from something I wasn't expecting much to be honest.
[Warning! Might contain slight spoilers!]
First of all, lemme just start by saying I wasn't expecting much from this.
Announced as a ~20 minutes anime adaptation of a fan doujin by Naho Ooishi, not even Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama, produced as a tie-in for some obscure Japanese exclusive arcade game.
It looked cheap and simple.
Unlike 2008's original Dragon Ball special, backgrounds looked more simplistic, there was less characters around/animated/voiced, simpler plot....

But Dragon Ball Z: Episode of Bardock's special turned out pretty nice in the end.
The art style Toei took is closer to Toriyama than Ooishi's.
The fights were well choreographed and if the story was pretty paper-thin, it was nice just for this once to get some all-new Dragon Ball material, featuring such different and original content.

Freezer (Frieza as you Americans put it) was pretty creepy in the little instance we saw of him, the "end" of Bardock, Goku's father, was well rendered and the plot continued from that point didn't really ruin the original OVA's ending to me.
Oh, and the new baddie Chilled was a pretty nice addition to Dragon Ball's universe!
He had a pretty neat design all around.

It was quite short so it didn't really go anywhere, but it was a fun story in the end.

Now, to the question Otakus/Nerds all around the world are raging about... Is this "canon" or not?
Well, I guess isn't that clear and even at Toei they wouldn't care less about this question.
I mean if you count this, or any of the anime's original fillers (Son Goku and Picollo learning to drive a car..), or the OVAs (Cooler,..) or even the anime's original continuation Dragon Ball GT is really up to you in the end.. as long as it doesn't detract from the Toriyama's original manga.
You can decide to ignore any of these or accept all of them. It's up to your "nerdiness" to decide what's ok or not, all these are official produced materials.

I find it funny how Bardock becomes the legendary Super Saiyajin in this movie (being the first to gain that form chronologically), creates that legend in the past and fullfils it as well.
Though it turns later Super Saiyajins "not legendaries" (and ignores Broly or renders him "normal").

And I also like the fact it leaves on an open note, leaving many questions to be answered.
(was he the first Saiyain? would he form planet Vegeta as we later know it? did he live on, did he die shortly? what would he do now, living in the past? why didn't he chase the rest of Freezer's family?)

All in all, nice little special.
As M. Ebert would put it "Thumb up!"

Anime NEWS! More Dragon Ball!

In 2008, fans of Dragon Ball were treated to a special gift near Christmas, whole new Dragon Ball Z content in the form of an original new movie taking place at the end of the manga/in-between the DBZ and DBGT anime series.

This year, Toei allied with the Jump magazine did it again!

Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock!!

But instead of making up some new content, this time it is actually an adaptation of a "doujin" follow-up to the old "Father of Goku" Bardock TV Special.
This manga was a sequel of sorts made for V-Jump by the mangaka Naho Ooishi.
Ooishi's got a pretty similar style to the master Akira Toriyama. Not quite the same though, the differences are there particularly on the faces and expression (and the over-use of gradients/shades in the backgrounds). But similar enough, she surely captured the rhythm, panels breakdown/angles and the narration narrowed down.

Anyway, her story was popular enough to get the animated treatment for this year's Christmas!

This all-new TV special was done by a branch of Toei purposely titled the "Dragon Ball Force Project".
(so...huh.. does that mean more original new DB content coming up...?)

This anime was made in a very similar art style to Toriyama's own instead of closely following the manga version. Some changes were made here and there.

It will air today December 17 actually, for Jump Festa 2012 (and will be available online later on Toei's official website).

And here's a clip from it:

For those who want to know, Ooishi is currently making a DB parody/tribute/summary called Dragon Ball SD.

and it looks sort of like this

It's not ground breaking work either, just simple fun tribute with chibi characters.
Not as hilarious as some actual DBZ parodies out there, but from a fan of Toriyama's work, to other fans.

Also, Chilled, the big baddie in this new story related to Freezer/Freeza/Frieza (pick your fav, according to where you live) was actually designed by Toriyama himself!
Check this piece of art:

Stay tuned for more!
This definitively looks like an easy winner!

As a long time fan (who kinda forgot and lost touch with mangas they years going by), I'm happy to see some brand new Dragon Ball stuff coming out!
And it seems to be a true work of love for the series rather than some cashing in as usual *cough*theamericanlivemovieadaptation*cough*.

Gamin' NEWS! Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi Launch Trailer

Here's the launch trailer to Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi.
What's the count? I lost track..
What does it make with this one, a bazillion almost identical Dragon Ball games?

Anyway, the trailer was neat, sorta, kinda:

Now you can create your own DBZ fancharacter!

Pegasus fantasy

Here's one of my all time favorite random videos.

A couple years back, in the french reality TV show À la Recherche de la Nouvelle Star, which is the francophone localization of the show Pop/American Idol, a guy, I mean an otaku, went there and rather that singing some popular pop song sang an anime opening song.

Saint Seiya's very own classic opening theme.

It's epic. It's awesome. Mind blowing. His accent is bad sure, but the judges decided to mock the guy...those fools...they didn't know by letting this air they were creating a legend!
"Jerome Saint Seiya" was born.

Here's the original video:

And here's what some "Jerome" fans did:

Nowadays, even Japanese fans continue to share and discuss this video on youtube!

NEWS! Uchū Kaizoku Kyaputen Hārokku!!

Remember the Space Pirate, I mean Captain Harlock?!

Known for us, guys living in a francophone country as Capitaine Albator. This character was huuuuuuuuge here during the 80s and even the early 90s (thanks for reruns).
I even bought some mangas of it while they were releasing them during the 90s.

Well, did you know Toei Animation's is going to make 3D features now, not just produce live action and make 2D animes!?

In 2011 they're gonna release 2 CGi animated features.

That's right. A Harlock CGi feature! Well, I'm not a huuuge fan of the whole CGi movies (from Pixar I only watched the 2 original Toy Story flicks when they were released and nothing else since then) I thought maybe some of you might want to take a look at it, you can have a look at the recently released trailer here

Just a link! Couldn't find better, since Toei's been deleting all videos of it on youtube!

Anyway, you can have a good look at his ship right here:

Nice! A bit dark-ysh/emo, but I guess that's what you'd get from Japan nowadays! (just look at the recent Final Fantasy games or any anime!)

The other CGi flick will be Gaiking.
