VGR PoP Forgotten Sands [DS Version]

The Sands of Time Trilogy might have been closed with Two Thrones but with a new interest in the series thanks to a movie adaptation, Ubisoft thought it was a good commercial move to bring the series back in an all-new episode just for this time.

The game was released amongst most systems. In what I like to call the "Forgotten Sands chapters" (which would have made a much better title for this game IMO).
Like Untold tales or Missing chapters, all these games across the different consoles aren't the same but instead different episodes taking place in the 7 years gab between The Sands of Time and Warrior Within.
This is a review of the "DS version" available exclusively for the Nintendo DS system.

VGR: Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands
From Ubisoft/Ubisoft Casablanca
Played on Nintendo DS
Also available on /

Type Sidescrollin' platformer
Year 2010

Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands on the PSP system is another "interquel" episode in the Prince of Persia series taking place in the time gap in-between Sands of Time and Warrior Within. It is unrelated to the other Forgotten Sands game on the Sony PSP and can be seen as yet another separate adventure with no clear ties to the main series.

More precisely, this one seems to be a direct sequel of the HD Forgotten Sands as the djinn Razia is seen here still trapped, living the Prince's sword.

This game is also quite reminiscent of the 2008 game Fallen King, it seems Ubisoft Casablanca might has well been working on a pseudo-sequel of the adventures of that other prince before turning this title into a well timed Forgotten Sands chapter just in time for the live movie.
As such, the game was built upon that other game's engine, gameplay. (so, don't hesitate to check that previous review ;))

We're off to a good start...

The story opens up in medias res, as we join our mysterious Prince once more, as he awakens during a sort of ritual he's being part of.
It seems our hero has been abducted by a cult this time. They brought our hero to a temple somewhere in India, used his sword which was still containing the djinn Razia and obtain the royal blood of our hero as a sacrifice to bring back their mysterious "demonic" master.
This new evil escapes from the temple...with a price. Our Prince lost his memories and Razia is left powerless, trapped in the form of a yellow Navi-like creature.

As the Prince escapes from this place, he falls down into the dungeon. (back to the roots of the series?)
The dark ceremony was responsible for his disorientation.
The bad guys mutated into some kind of sand creatures.
Now trying to get his lost memories back and Razia's powers, they escape from the collapsed temple and go on a quest that will bring them all across India to hunt down and kill the members of this cult.

It's good to be the Prince!

I say story but that's all you'll get, besides some cute comic book-style cutscenes here and there.
No voice acting here, which honestly for this sort of game wasn't really a problem.

Once their memories and powers back, the Prince will have to face the resurrected evil force behing this cult which will try to conquer Babylon, and then bring back a more familiar setting for the Sands of Time trilogy.
The "Razia and his sword"-plot will also be resolved by the end, which ties in nicely (sort of) with Warrior Within were these Forgotten Sands elements were nowhere to be seen.

As for the game itself? It's all quite simple.
The game is divided into various levels, more linear than what you're used to see in the usual games of the series, each regrouped into 4 distinct chapters each with their own visual theme.
A boss awaits you at the end of each of these worlds, as well as a new gimmick-power to use in the following episode.
Razia never flies around like those annoying tutorial aids in other games, her portrait only appears in the cutscenes.
The game uses a super deformed chibi design again, like the last DS game.

What are you selling, stranger?

The game really feels like an improved version of Fallen King.
Ubi Casablanca built upon the problems of last time.

The game is again entirely stylus-controlled. No buttons required!
It's a 3D sidescroller. Back to basic, like Jordan Mechner's original. Thus, the story might sound basic but it is also a nice throwback to a simpler "get the villain, save Persia" scenario.
You guide the Prince by holding the direction to which he will run to. He'll climb, jump, sword attack, guard quite easily.
Combat happens often in closed areas or open space, not usually during the platforming sequences. It's a return to duels like in the original games.

The gameplay really feels more precise, tighter than in Fallen Kings. It runs on the same engine, but it works better, it is more responsive.
Things answer quickly to the tap of the screen.

Power of the stylus, I call upon thee!!

As far as PoP's powers go, this is also pretty basic.
Razia will provide the Prince with some sand/time powers over the course of the game, the usual.
It's a return to more "temporal" powers. Slowing down time, going back earlier in time...

Again, all stylus-controlled. You tap on the correct power icon on the screen, and bam! Activated!

Where it gets original is that you can tap over "sand", be it little sand dusts around or flowing sand-rivers...and affect it by rubbing it.
Either solidifying sand to use it as a platform or manipulating the sand to affect you, the platforms or even enemies!

By drawing a streak that connects some sand and a villain, you can take over his controls and use his weapons or uses his unvoluntary help to activate elements/traps/etc.

It's the Power of Sand!!~

Making a return from Two Thrones is also some riding sequences on horses. Often quite easy, they more like an excuse to grab some easy rubies for later.

Speaking of which, there's a little update/management system to the game.
You collect rubies by defeating enemies, in treasure chests, etc. and can go to a merchant between levels to buy additional power-ups, new in-game costumes, new weapons.
It's all quite simple but at least it's there! (as you can see in the drawings around these very words the different clothes you can put on the Prince)

Game Over, man! Game Over!

One one side, it's a much better game than Fallen King, graphic and gameplay wise.
On another, it's so much shorter.

The game just feels a lot easier, the boss fights are some of the easiest I've seen (besides one that got me thinking and trying a lot...only to find the obvious solution was the correct one).
Gone are Zal's magic powers/puzzles. Everything much ore straight forward here (you die? go back in time!).

Overall, sure, it's nothing new or really original..but it's still a good game.
The game is very simple to get your hands on, simple to play, feels "classic".
It's that simple, a mini Prince of Persia!

The music is quite forgettable. Too simplistic and background-y unlike your usual PoP soundtracks.
But it serves its purpose.

A very easy game, thanks to powers and frequent checkpoints. Enemies are a barely actual threats, more like convenient health drops, always giving you potions to replenish your life.

Anyways, it's a fun and entertaining game. For fans of platformers, sidescrollers and the series.

I give it:

DC News! Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes trailer

Speaking of DC, here's the newly released first look at the upcoming Traveller's Tales videogame Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes.

Which looks like it will be a Justice League themed sequel to the previous Lego Batman game...

It will be released on almost every single system - PC, Xbox 360, PS3, Vita, Wii, DS, 3DS  - this summer.

this looks like it might be a pretty fun title!
Why didn't they simply make a Lego JLA, though?

Gamin' NEWS! that other Aliens game

So, some Aliens, probably even some of you guys, are awaiting for Aliens: Colonial Marines for Xbox 360, PC and PS3, right?
But surely, not a lot of you know that there's another Aliens game coming up for around the same time.

This one called Aliens: Infestation and developed by WayForward Technologies! (also getting published by Sega)
Now, WayForward is a company I really dig. They're one of the few studios left that is still able to work with beautiful 2D sprites, and make some great fun arcad-ysh titles. And I'm not speaking of all the lousy flash-like games people rush on the Xbox live or for Iphones, I'm speaking of beautifully animated real sprites, old school! Their more mainstream titles include Contra 4 or that DS Thor tie-in game.
But I prefer to mention their awesome gorgeous A Boy and His Blob remake on the Wii, Batman: The Brave and the Bold – The Videogame or Shantae.

This Aliens game is done like your typical old school 16-bits action shooter. Some call it a throwback to the Contra series.
I prefer to say, it looks similar or even inspired by that old awesome Alien 3 game.
It is set for September 30. (in most countries)

Here's some gameplay:

ALIENS: INFESTATION par SEGA

You'll be able to recruit and play as a bunch of various Marines through the game. The goal will be obviously to face hordes of Xenomorphs, while traveling across memorable sceneries from the movies such as the USS Solaco and more!

VGR PoP Fallen King

Sometimes simply called "Prince of Persia" in some countries, without the subtitle like the 2008 reboot.
The Fallen King is a brand new episode in the PoP franchise.
Released around the same time, it is actually a sequel to the Tree of Life story. Taking place even further in the story, right after the Epilogue. (which was published even a year after down the line and bridging both games)

You probably know my love for "chibi" episodes in series, I had to get this one day-one!
How did it fare, and was it a worthy entry in the long running Prince of Persia series?

VGR: Prince of Persia: The Fallen King
From Ubisoft/Ubisoft Casablanca
Played on Nintendo DS
Also available on /
Type Sidescrollin' platformer
Year 2008

This game isn't actually the first time Ubisoft played with a sidescroller Prince of Persia (like the original!). Ubi tried playing with the original formula of the series in past Mobiles and GBA adaptations of the Sands of Time series.

But it certainly is the first time they tried making an original entry for an handheld system rather than a port.
(and unlike previous spinoffs, this one is a platformer and not some attempt at playing with genres)

Since this was one of the first games from their then-new studio Ubisoft Casablanca (yay for another Ubi studio in another country!) and a DS exclusive, they had to play a bit with the conept and gameplay...

Our favorite Prince is back for m... Wait?! What's with his design this time??

The Fallen King sees the return of the new claw-equipped Prince in a new adventure.

We're once again back in ancient Persia. The story follows the ending of his previous adventure.
The battle between the gods of light and shadow goes on, Ormazd and Ahriman.
Elika and the Prince splitted. She stayed with the Ahura to lead a resistance force while the Prince went on his own to find a solution.

At the beginning of this story, told via still artworks in sepia tones, the Prince arrives in a new place, the City of the New Dawn.
The newly re-liberated Ahriman is wrecking havoc all over the world, spreading like a disease, infecting the land. The Prince tries to locate the local King of the land to help put a stop to Ahriman. There's tales of this king who supposedly was able to communicate with and summon Ormazd.

On his arrival, the Prince meets a new companion, Zal, one of the King's Magi.
Zal has half of his body already corrupted.
Together they team up in their quest to find the King who's been literally split in two by the Corruption.

Once's fine. Twice won't go the same way.

Having an ally in his quest's becoming the main mechanic of this new PoP series.

You'll find yourself controlling the Prince once more, this time in a sidescrolling point of view.
The Prince plays as you'd expect. He uses his acrobatics to move around, jump, climb, claw his way on the side of surfaces to use it to jump around some more and move on.
The duels are back like in the original Jordan Mechner classic (and the next gen console version).
And no more random beat 'em all mélee combat like in the Sands of Time series. But traditional duels one-on-one (and something one-on-two enemies coming by both side). Where the key to win is to play between the simple and basic three abilities. Strike, block or use the magical powers.

That's right, Zal will provide some additional controls to the table.
You'll play as both the Prince and Zal. The Prince covers the physical attacks/controls and Zal will use magical attacks/powers.
Zal's magic will help you grab part of the Corruption to your own advantage. (catch the Prince to move him around, interact with the level design, move platforms, etc..)
Throughout the game he will obtain new powers, you'll gain new techniques to progress and sometimes even revisits places.

The Prince will follow the stylus.

Where the game probably leaves mixed opinions is on its gameplay.
You don't control directly the Prince. But rather, the direction he will run to.
The game is entirely controlled by the DS' stylus.

The platforming is done by tapping on the touchscreen, setting a direction for the Prince to move forward.
For example to climb a surface you'll tap the direction for him to run to, tap the wall and he'll jump over it and use his claw to stick on it and tap a rope nearby, for example, for him to jump off the wall.

It gets a moment to get used to.
But I seriously didn't had much problem with these controls after a while.
The difficulty is quite progressive and in the end you'll find yourself doing it easily and so much more.

Besides these unusual setting, you will get such an old school feel that the new control becomes second hand.
It feels pretty similarly to the original PoP.
(don't judge the game solely on that, only crybabies complain about such superficial changes and evolution)

Yup, another day in Persia.

The main objective is to collect 4 pieces of a seal to banish Ahriman from the Land. And find the King.

Through the adventure, Zal will become more and more corrupted, so you'll even have to find him back in some older (indicated) levels and defeat him once or trice.

The music, a point I love to discuss in PoP installments, isn't something to write about really.
It does its job I guess, but is also pretty forgettable. Apart from the PoP 2008 Main Theme remixed for the system.

The graphics are in 3D (and some elements in 2D). Nice, colorful, apart from the more Corrupted sceneries, which use more tern color palettes.
The top screen will display the level's map. Boss fight are huge and will take both screens.
The game contains a ton of levels spread around various "worlds". (and there's a level selection map for each zone)

Overall, it's nice throwback at the original game. And also a good continuation of the main 2008 PoP game.
Not an important plot-advancing sequel. But a nice filler.
(I doubt it will have much impact on the following game)

The platforming by tapping needs some time to get used to, but nothing impossible, really.
Whether or not you'll like it depends on how well you can handle stylus-only platforming.

If there's one big criticism against this one, it's that it's too darn' long. (something you never hear much these days, as far as platformers go)
But for me, who's been through lots of long 80s/90s platform games (Mario Bros 3, Rayman,...) it wasn't that hard or impossible to finish.

If you like exploring the "Arabian Nights"-ysh Persia in this legendary series, you'll probably like this one as well.
If you're not liking the concept of controlling an acrobatic character through the stylus only (no option to not do so) or all this I've talked about above, move on!

I give it:

a DUKE NUKEM DS suddenly appears!

Today I checked the big local electronic store (at "Mediamark", the equivalent of "Best Buy" in most Europe).
And you know what I found?

DUKE FRIGGIN' NUKEM!!!

Whaaaaa..??
You might not know, but I kinda dig Duke, and I planned to review most Duke-related games on this blog some of these days.
Already did the first one.
So, the story behind this game was that it was canned. 3D Realms, the developer behind the duke went bankrupt. 2K Games kept the franchise thanks to a deal they made during the production of Duke Nukem Forever. And Gearbox was making the official sequel.
And a DS/PSP game long in the making was canceled because it was taking to much time, plus it was gonna be published by Apogee (3D Realms household company.). This original title was supposed to be a 3-episodes long game (3 separate games) where you could switch between all of Duke's previous gameplay, meaning FPS, third person shooter and sidescroller.
It was called Duke Nukem Critical Mass.

It was announced as canceled when 3D Realms close its door, the franchise reverted to 2K Games and all things Apogee were shut down.
Then a rumour the game was still coming, albeit under a new non-Duke Nukem name.

And today? BLAAAAM!

Duke's Back!
So...random? Unexpected!
And it's a real game! I almost expected a week's old April Fool in the store.

But what is...
?

There isn't even any mention of 2K Games?!
Just... APOGEE??
Is this a fake?
I check wikipedia, no mention of it. (I already alerted the nerds over there to edit the page)
Gamespot, IGN, etc...
Nope.

And even the release date states 2010!! No 2011?!

Back from an alternate universe? An alternate Earth's joke on us?
I was even expecting a Duke Nukem forever on the Xbox 360 there.

Anyway, the game is fun, feels great.
It could look a tad bit better, sure.

It's pretty close to Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project, though less polished.
Sidescrolling action with many clever different gameplay sequences.

And on a related note, here's a Duke Nukem Forever trailer
FOR MATURE AUDIENCE! (warning)
(or should I say, "IMMATURE AUDIENCE" am I right or what? :P)

Gamin' NEWS! Green Lantern's light, in pixels

Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters!
That's not the name of a sequel of the upcoming movie already.
That's the name of the game they're improvising making to coincide with the movie's release.
It will feature Ryan Reynolds as Hal, will be released at least on Xbox 360 and PS3. And it will feature an original storyline showcasing the movie versions of the Manhunters.

"Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters allows players to assume the role of Hal Jordan to battle the Manhunters—a once noble android police force who are now bent on destroying the Green Lantern Corps.Players take control of the most powerful weapon in the universe – the Green Lantern Power Ring – and conjure a spectacular range of “hard-light” constructs including a gatling gun, giant fists, and much more as they take flight to outer space in an effort to restore Intergalactic order. For more information please visit  http://www.facebook.com/.Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters  takes flight on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, Nintendo DS, and Nintendo 3DS on June 7th."

Oh-ho...

"GIANT FISTS".

'Guess that's mostly what this game (and probably movie too) will have the ring wielders do, those very same rings that are supposed to be able to will anything based on the GL's imagination.
'Guess the programmers working on this game aren't the kind of people who'd receive Power Rings.

Anyway, trailer time!

Alright, so it's a CGi trailer, it doesn't really show much how the actual gameplay will be.
But from what we can guess from the first pics, it will simply be a generic beat 'em all with HD graphics *yaaaawn*

Sonic has become such a polemical subject on the internet nowadays... -sigh-
