The first one is a pretty good continuation of the movie (which adapts some more stories from the manga). The theme song reused the movie's main title music, the art and animation stayed pretty on par with the movie quality wise.
Then a second show was created without Takahata (who at the time was going to be part of Miyazaki's now-classic animation Studio Ghibli), this one cheaper ran for a mere year.

Sadly they have never been translated/released outside Japan, though the Japanese DVDs do contain English subtitles!
