Can you believe this combined ad for Avengers (just out now, about everywhere) and the awesome Castle TV series got fans imagining Nathan Fillion is Antman in the movie, all over again?
Well..me too. I'd make a perfect Hank Pym....
(but I'd still prefer if we could had him over at DC, as Hal Jordan!! >__<)

DC News! Superman Versus The Elite

With Justice League: Doom finally released, it's now time to turn over for DC's next animated project.
Which will be Superman Versus The Elite...

Here's the official pitch:

The Elite, a team of super-powered antiheroes, is renowned for killing their enemies. Despite the acclaim and approval the Elite enjoy, Superman knows they are in the wrong, creating more harm than good by their methods. Tensions between them finally culminate in a mass showdown on Jupiter’s moons, when Superman is forced to prove that violence is never a positive.Superman vs. The Elite, the latest in the series of DC Universe Animated Original Movies from Warner Bros. Animation, will be available on Blu-ray, DVD, On Demand and for Download.

It's announced for a Summer release date. (no clue regarding the month?!)

It seems this new direct-to-video movie will be based on Joe Kelly's run in Action Comics (more specifically, issue #775) which featured new villains Elite and Manchester Black.
Sounds like an original pick for a movie feature!
It will be a bit darker than your usual Superman cartoons for sure.

Superman Versus The Elite will have George Newbern as Superman and Pauley Perrette as Lois Lane.
And the film is directed by Michael Chang (Batman: Brave and the Bold,..) with Bruce Timm as executive producer and Alan Burnett (Green Lantern: Emerald Knights) as producer.

I like it, I like the idea.
The segment about Green Arrow's boxing arrow was random but funny (and waaaay too short). So far my favorite's been Plastic Man's episode!

MR Super (2010 film)

If there were superheroes in real life, and I mean actual "realistic" vigilantes not comic book-ysh-super powered flying people, how far would such individuals go?
Could they make a difference? Wouldn't they be considered just nutjobs, "psychopaths" by our society standards?
How detached from reality would one go to be able to live such a fantasy?

That's the kinda question director James Gunn tried to ask, amongst many others in his superhero/comedy/drama Super.
Be warned, this is a film strictly for a mature audience only!

In development since the early 2000s, Super is an idea James Gunn has been trying to develop and put to screen since a very long time.
Mostly due to a lack of investors and no interest from producers.
One of the earlier versions even ended up as a non-Gunn directed film called The Specials in 2000, directed by Craig Mazin.
Finally thanks to the success of his 2006 scifi comedy/horror film Slither, James Gunn was finally able to produce this 2002 script into a low-budget independent film.

Written and directed by Gunn, it features an all star cast of such actors as Rainn Wilson (The Office,.), Ellen Page (X-Men 3,..), Liv Tyler, Kevin Bacon and even a cameo from Nathan Fillion (Castle, Firefly)!

But,
What is it about exactly?

Super tells the story of this cook from a little local dinner called Frank D'Arbo (Rainn).
Frank never had much going on in his life.
The movie opens with Frank telling the audience he actually only had two relevant moments, two good memories in his entire life. (which he is putting up on the wall as lil' drawings he made)
Marrying this beautiful girl Sarah. And that time he helped the police catch some thief.

Sarah is a recovering addict.

One day, Sarah leaves Frank for this mysterious guy named Jacques (Kevin Bacon) who owns a club (and some other "less legal" businesses).
Frank loses all interest in his life, things don't make sense for him anymore..until one night when he's literally touched by the hand of God in a terrifying (and very graphic) dream. Was it only a simple nightmare or an actual divine intervention?
Inspired by another local TV "hero" from Jesus Network called the Holy Avengers (Fillion), Frank decides to become an actual superhero.
Frank believes he was chosen for a purpose. He goes at the nearest comic book shop for research. There he mets Libby (Page)...

Frank finally dons a secret identity as the Crimson Bolt and armed with a wrench, starts to fight crime in the streets.
Simple drug dealers, child molesters and even more trivial law-breaking persons all suffer the wrath of a Crimson Bolt on a criminal-punishment spree.
As he slowly starts to use his vigilante persona for more random reasons (and gradually acting more like a psychopath than anything), he is finally joined by Libby who goes as his sidekick Boltie...

Super is a sort of R-Rated deconstruction of superheroes.
While it originally didn't make much sense to make a movie out of this subject back in 2002, nowadays, with all these Marvel and DC movies on screens, it is a much more interesting form of analysis of what makes one "super" hero or not.

While other movies use the usual secret origin story to base future installments of on-going franchises, Super uses it mostly for the personal journey-aspect.
Super tells this journey of self-discovery Frank undergoes. Frank isn't really an altruist person, he uses this mask the costume provides for more selfish reasons.
Harmful purposes.

In a way it may start from the same premise as Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass, but it only shares the same concept at the start. It deconstructs the superhero myth and genre.
Frank is closer to an actual psychopath when your really think about it. He goes on this crazy journey.
What his right and what his wrong - Frank's logic which we follow through the movie might tell us one thing, but then we met Libby who's go her own perceptions of right and wrong.
Libby makes a great contrast with her mentor, with her love for violence and profanity - in opposite to Frank's ideals. 

It is also a spiritual journey.
The movie as a lot of relgious content.
"Some of his Children are Chosen" as Frank put above the closet in which he hides his costume.
It's nothing new  really, superheroes always had their own share of religion-inspired themese (Superman has often been seen as a Christ figure, and Batman as a martyr figure). The difference is that here James Gunn is quite explicit about the kind of themes you can decide to read superheroes. (the Crimson Bolt has his own disciple, Boltie,..).

It also mocks the glorification of violence surrounding this type of action movies/superhero characters.
Quite violent, often graphic but mostly stylized with onomatopoeias.
The Crimson Bolt goes awry playing superhero, using this freedom Frank never had, imitating superheroes. There's a danger in date.

The film ends in a bloodbath, in a spectacular crazy Grindhouse-style climatic battle.
(in which the director doesn't forget to remember us and our hero death is real)

It's a great interesting movie for fans of the genre.
Tyle Bates provides a simple but epic enough score (alongside various music from divers artists).

Overall, it's a very fun ride.
A black-comedy like you don't see much of anymore.

James Gunn asks various questions and take us on a darker more violent analysis of the genre than Kick-Ass. (probably closer to the original comic book than Kick-Ass' live adaptation)
Mark Millar (Kick-Ass' writer) actually defended Super of not copying Kick-Ass.

The movie features an high-range casting, including fun cameos from Nathan Fillion as this parody of an actual "costumed hero" called Bibleman in real life.
It's a fun, gore and trash movie. Similar to the old Toxic Avenger movies from Troma Entertainment (Gunn actually worked there for a long time and wrote several pieces there).

A great exploration of the genre.

I give it:

DC News! JL: DOOM

Warner Bros just released the cover art of their upcoming new animated film feature, Justice League Doom!

Batman on the cover, well played Warner, well played.
I'm sure this will get them some extra copies on sale.

The movie will be released on February 28 2012 and feature the voices of Nathan Fillion, Tim Daly, Michael Rosenbaum and a bunch of others :)

Cartoon NEWS! The upcoming new DC animated movies

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment revealed some informations about DC's upcoming new animated movies!
First up, Green Lantern: Emerald Knights!

Emerald Knights will be released on June 7, to coincide with the live/CGi Ryan Reynolds movie in theaters.
But with a much better Hal Jordan in the person of Nathan Fillion!

It is mostly based on the Tales of the Green Lantern comics (which I reviewed here)

I like this sort of military/scifi look they have on the art direction.


After that we'll have another adaptation, Batman: Year One.
Based on Frank Miller (only..?) good story.

This one's planned for a for a fall release.

It will also bring back the DC short movies, a Catwoman short will accompany B:YO.  My guess? It will probably be the miniseries "When In Rome" in 10 minutes :P



And either later this year or in early 2012, there's another one coming.
Justice League: Doom.
Based on the Justice League story arc JLA: Tower of Babel.

In short, Batman made some contingency plans to defeat all the JLA, in case they'd have to take one of them down one day (due to a change of heart, mind control, body swap, etc..).
But Ra's al Ghul steals these plans, captures and  defeats all of them...and it's only thanks to some small margin of errors that one of them escapes his fate, helps out another one, and so forth.
A great plot by Mark Waid which had some lasting impact in the current DCU. (nobody fully trusts Bats anymore, his secret plans continue to make his alliances uneasy, etc..)
The (sadly departed) Dwayne McDuffie wrote this adaptation and was gonna be behind it.
I'm glad they're keeping his work alive and going through with it.

Hope this one turns out fun!

Cartoon NEWS! Green Lantern Emerald Knights Trailer!

With the newly released All Star Superman original animated DC movie out (buy it now!), it's time to anticipate the upcoming new original animated DC movie already!

Green Lantern Emerald Knights is the upcoming title.
It will be released as a companion piece to the live Green Lantern movie.

Like Batman: Gotham Knight before it will be a sort of anthology featuring various tales, only this time they will all be done in the same artistic style.  There are six stories, and there is going to be one overall arc that connects them all.
Hal Jordan will serve as narrator telling those tales of the Corps to new member Arisia.
(so I expect this to be sort of like an adaptations of the Tales of the GLCorps book)

Oh and the Sinestro Corps will make their debut appearance outside the comics!

It will be released on June 7, 2011!

And one of my favorite aspects of it is that Nathan Fillion is casted as Hal Jordan!
Much better casting choice than Ryan Reynolds.

Nathan Fillion has always been a big fan of the character. He said: "I was always reading the comic books, I was always a spectator, now I feel like I own a little piece of Green Lantern."

The movie won't really be a direct sequel to the previous Green Lantern movie First Flight, but it can still be seen as taking place after it from what Bruce Timm said. It will at least feature the same art direction.

Anyway, here's the very first pic of Green Lantern's new upcoming animated movie.
Or movies, since Green Lantern: Emerald Knights will be this time a compilation of animated shorts, much like Batman: Gotham Knight was.
Only this time they'll keep an unified look and won't use a japanese animation look.

It will be out on June 17, just in time for the live movie.

But wait!
That's not all nor the best news.
Hal Jordan will be voiced by Nathan Fillion, who honestly sounds like a much better choice than Ryan Reynolds to me.

Movie NEWS! Super "clip"

There's a new super hero in town.
The Crimson Bolt-

 Dun dun duuun~

You may know him from The Office.
It's Rainn Wilson starring as this down-to-earth hero in his new flick "Super".
With all those Kickass and Watchmen, you had to expect some more superhero movies being made, and not just adaptation.
With an upcoming (highly anticipated from me) TV show called The Cape, a fantastic four ripoff called No Ordinary Family and a ton of movies in production, it's the golden age of the live original super heroes!

"Super" is a sort of Mystery Men meets Kickass, that is, a realistic yet comedic movie. More grounded in reality unlike Kickass' jetpack, however not that serious.

 
And here's the synopsis:
"A guy named Frank has his wife Sarah leaves him for a criminal drug lord named Jacques.
Frank decides to become a superhero, "The Crimson Bolt" and fight for truth, justice and the American Way.
He starts his crusade against criminals and wrong-doers using his own-made costume and a wrench tool
Then he's joined by a local comic book store employee, who becomes his sidekick "Boltie".

The two team up against Jacque in the streets of crimes."
It was described as a dark comedy by its director James Gunn, and I'm personally getting quite interested in this movie.

They didn't reveal much for now only that Nathan Fillion, Liv Tyler, Kevin Bacon, and Andre Royo will also star along Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page and even Rob Zombie!!

Now I'll be posting what I wanted to call Random Reviews as well on the blog. What will be these RR you may ask? Well, everything that won't fit the previous categories! TV shows? Cartoons? CD? Etc..etc...

Another Jess Whedon cult classic.
I already reviewed Dr. Horrible in the past!
Firefly may have not been featured in my Favorite TV Shows top list, but it still is one of my favorite scifi shows ever!

The fans will notice something Firefly-sh here :P

Btw, it's my brother's. No, not Knux, the hat is my brother's. Knuckles is just a plush!

I was going to make one of those Quick-Reviews thingies I've done a couple, to review all separate episodes..but I prefered to finally review the series as whole instead.
I may use Quick-Reviews for current on-going shows though...

Firefly was a pretty original TV Show created by Joss Whedon, the genius behind such cult classics as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Dr. Horrible and the upcoming epic comic book movie The Avengers.

It's a show that mixes pretty well Old West with Science Fiction.
A sort of retro-futuristic universe.
And it's pretty well grounded into our reality, unlike, say, Star Wars, Star Trek and all the other Star-shows...

Western-like duels in Spaaaaaace~

The show was canceled after only 14 episodes, but what a fantastic universe was detailed and explored in such little time...
I won't blame everything on the Channel, the producers or anything and write another long-ass rant like so many other fans like to do. Instead I'm gonna focus on the bright side.

The show introduced Captain Mal and the crew aboard is firefly-like ship called Serenity and their encounters with the authority in this not that far from today future.

In the future, a supra-governmental entity called the Alliance, composed of mostly America and China, conquered space travel. The humans live now in outer space in little colonies and such.
There's been a great war, a Unification War. Our hero, Mal was fighting on the side of the Independents..but lost the war... Mal named his ship Serenity after the Battle of Serenity Valley, the final battle during the Unification War.
Now he's smuggler and lives some crazy adventures day-to-day with his loyal crew.

It really feels like Joss & co, took out what was the best about Han Solo, and created a whole new universe from that!

Spaceships flying next to a bunch of cows!! Only in Firefly~

The show rests on a solid and original backstory, fantastic scripts which explores many relations of its universe and a great cast of characters!

Malcolm Reynolds, played by Nathan Fillion, really runs the show!
Fillion's a great actor, and this is probably one of his best characters!
The rest of his crew is as well detailed and in the very few episode the show had we even really got to explore how the characters think and who they were.
Zoe, Serenity's first mate, long time friend of Mal and the wife of Wash, pilot, funny guy (and big fan of dinosaurs it seem :P).
There's also Inara, a "companion" (huh..imagine a space geisha!).
Book, a "shepherd" (sort of space-preacher~) who seems to hide a mysterious past..
Kaylee, the engineer-gal. Simon, passenger in the first episode and later the doctor on board of the Serenity. He was tryin' to protect and help his sister, River. Played by Summer Glau in one of her first roles.
And finally Jayne Cobb (Adam Baldwin!). Gun for hire, mercenary and big guy on the ship! One of the fan favorite's character in this universe and one with the most episodes analysing his comportements and change of heart during the time spent with this crew.

Alright..I admit it... This picture's just an excuse to draw the rest of the crew :D

I could spend a lot of time detailing all the episodes or making praises of the show...
Instead, I'm just gonna say what the show's about and what it did accomplish!

Firefly is a lot more about the characters than the big epic interplanetary fight scenes!
Though the CGi used here and there, mostly for the ship, was pretty well done and believable.
You won't find epic space wars and fake 3D alien creatures in Firefly.
It's grounded in a realistic universe (as much as scifi goes) and is mostly about the war that happened with space travel and colonies and its later consequences.
Each character seems to explore aspects of it. River and Simon are mostly here to see how far the government went, with their experiences, protections, etc..
Book seems to hint some connections with the powers that be...though it wasn't ever really explored! (blame it on the cancelation :( yep..)
And Mal and Zoe are the wanted criminals of war...

It's a fantastic and very original setting.
The Old West touch is quite original and really make this show stand out amongst other scifi shows.
There are some hints are crazy experiments gone wrong and alien diseases (with the creatures known only as reavers) though we don't get to see it on the show...

Finally, it's a great show that only needed a handful of episodes to make us know a big colored and diverse cast such as this one, discover a whole new universe and create a fantastic bond with fans very dedicated to the show!
(just check all the fanbases encounters, websites, forums, projects and movements this show created! my question only is...where were they when this was on air??)

Overall, it's a great show and a must own for any scifi or Joss Whedon fan!

You won't regret it! And the complete set of episodes is easily available nowadays!
It's quite original, maybe not as exotic as a Star Wars nor as epic as the last Star Trek movie, but it really deserves its place amongst anyone's collection!

The show was canceled due to a very poor marketing and the producers not wanting to air the episodes in correct order (they didn't even show the first one!!) and the fact that it's a Joss Whedon show..
See, the man is a very great creative and make some very fine products but most of his shows get canceled anyway... Oh well...
At least the fans got a conclusion, an epilogue to the show some years later in a movie...but that's another story for another time...
(And Nathan Fillion fans can still see the guy in the very good crime series Castle!)

Anyway, great show, great bunch of episodes, fantastic cast & crew, solid writing...
You either already have it or are currently on the process of gettin' it, am I right? AM I RIGHT?? *wink wink nudge nudge*
