By now you know me, according you not just dropped on this blog (in that case, hello and welcome to G33K Life! - check out my FAQ, navigate using the buttons above or enjoy the articles, hope you'll stay with us~), anyway I love the indie scene, smaller budget projects, not just AAA-list titles, be it in movies, comics or games.
Today's subject?
Lylian.
An episodic beat 'em all sidescroller.
What is "Lylian" all about?
It's an independant game done by Pixelpickel studio - here's a link to their website.
The studio itself is quite young and is trying to bring a fresh air to the gaming scene with some original concepts and a stronge unique art direction.
I find the concept of an episodic sidescroller quite unique, we've seen it plenty of times with adventure games and even thrillers/3rd person action games (Alan Wake), but for sidescrollers it's a pretty uniquetake (and could bring back this old genre to life!).
(Yeah, we know Sega did it with Sonic 4 recently..but that's on a different scale, fandom and budget, the game's on so many platforms by now, plus it's basically an HD Sonic 1 which will get HD Sonic 2 and 3 sequels later on so..)
What is it about?
From the official page:
"You play as Lylian, a patient in the Hacklast Hospital's children ward.
She has the uncanny ability to spew forth figments of her mind into the 'real' world. And cause damage with the long sleeves of her straitjacket."
Nice pitch, which really is an excuse to use this formula, but sounds compelling!
Sort of like a 2D Psychonauts, heh?
Here's some pics:
The first episode will be out on PC early-next year.
Don't expect it to it Xboxlive/Wiiware anyday too soon, it's an Australian indi game, and in case you didn't knew, mostly (if not only) US games (and some japanese ones) have been released there so far.
Indie games on the Xboxlive arcade aren't available in Europe for exemple, you know?
The debut teaser:
And the brand new trailer, which show some gameplay, released today:
The art direction, specially with the trailer, sort of reminds me of Bioshock. (little sisters much?)
Gameplay wise...the experience looks pretty similar to the original Oddworld games, don't you think?
The whole series (once all episodes are out) will probably be put on a small-run DVD at the end, like many indie games often are (Machinarium an "indie" adventure game on PC did get a short-run retail release, though it wasn't episodic).
It's a game for PC and not console (for now at least), but give this one a try wil ya ;)
The PC gaming scene needs some luv :'3
Here's some more pics in the meantime:
